Project Background
Felicidades a Miss Universe! 2006 Miss Puerto Rico!
Johannes est Nomen Eius Attempting to ascertain relationships between descendants of Colonial, Creole and Indigenous inhabitants of Puerto Rico who lived back when the bottleneck effect of population and the surname anarchy were a reality. Only requirement is that you be a native Puerto Rican or descendnat of a native Puerto Rican (parent or grandparent). In registering, please include BOTH paternal and maternal surnames. Thank you. Doublecheck your email address so that our -join code- email does not bounce. Click on the icon at the bottom of this page to join. you will find us under the Geographic Projects. Please, this is not a club. We are serious genealogists many of whom have very extensive research databases and are now using DNA testing to find common relationships. If you are not serious about testing your DNA, do not send a request for a join authorization letter.
Note: IF YOU HAVE ALREADY TESTED WITH FTDNA, DO NOT USE THE JOIN APPLICATION. Please, use the blue join icon on your FTDNA personal page. We will receive your request on our administrator page and gladly add you to the Project after authorization.
Because of the changing surname practices in the Hispanic world, some of us from the island might be related and not realize it. For us, this may be a more practical way of tracing and confirming relationships. We also have a simultaneous project dealing with mitochondrial DNA. Within this study, we hope to prove not only our relationships to one another but disprove what has been widely believed to be a fact, the extinction of our Taíno indigenous roots after the discovery and colonization of Boriquén (La Isla de San Juan de Puerto Rico).
Note: Haplogroup R1b1 is the most common yDNA group in Europe. The basic yDNA test is for the first 12 markers. Many who only test 12 markers, will have the Atlantic Modal Haplotype (AMH) signature and have hundreds of non genealogical matches.

Because the overwhelming number of our yDNA group is R1b1, we are now recommending that you start with the yDNA25 test in order to join. For the purpose of our project, the yDNA12 marker test may serve to eliminate whom you are NOT related to but it is insufficient to prove relationships within a genetic AND genealogical timeframe using only 12 markers. You will actually then need to upgrade to be able to determine any relationship within our group. The science continues to grow and now up to 67 markers may be tested for in addition to a backbone SNP (defines your Haplogroup) and Deep SNP (defines the haplotype further into the specific subgroups or subclades.
To trace both paternal and maternal relationships through yDNA and mtDNA.
Project News
We have a simultaneous mtDNA study ongoing within the group. To date, we have the results for 151 of our project members. The majority have also tested their HVR2 region. Unlike in some projects, there are many, many EXACT matches within our own group. Several mtDNA HVR1 are always pending to be sent to the lab as well as several mtDNArefine and mtDNAplus. Participants are also upgrading to find their mtDNA-H clade. As our members find new connections with other members, many upgrade to the second region. This is a dynamic group.
Project Results
updated 03-27-2007
Our project began in May of 2003 with just two members. Today, we have 256 members (both male and female) participating in our project. Of these, 247 participants have returned their kits. Current members or new members are continually upgrading or sending in their kits. We have many participants from the National Geographic Genographic Project and welcome all to our group. Several are waiting for additional results. Many have had a variety of tests done including yDNA, mtDNA (HVR1 & HVR2) as well as DNAPrints (not an mtDNA or yDNA test but an autosomal test, See the FAQs page. In the male yDNA group, the majority of the results have been in the R1b Haplogroup as was expected since most members have European paternal lines ending up in Puerto Rico no matter if they put down SPAIN or country unknown. Besides R1b1, we also have members who are estimated to belong to yDNA Haplogroups B, R1a, K, K2, I, J2, J, G,G2, E3a, and E3b. Several have been SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) tested and confirmed their haplogroup.
We have many members within the group with exact matches on 12 and 25 markers with the same surname and with different surnames. Two others are brothers. In the oven: many are awaiting the results of their first 12, 25 or 37 marker tests. Those already tested have a genetic distance of from 0 to 3. Others are as far apart as 63.
