Haplogroup R1b

yDNA12 - ADNy12

updated 07-30-2005

Welcome to our project's R1b results page. Our geographical project is only about 18 months old, yet, we have 114 actively testing members in our project to date. The majority of these yDNA Surname Project members are estimated to be in Haplogroup R1b. Most in this group have also completed their upgrade to 25 and 37 markers. Two of the estimated R1bs were very unusual and their haplogroup was unknown for almost a year. It was not until one was tested for SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphism), that he was found to be P25+. This is a haplogroup specific mutation (see note below). Four other individuals in this group are SNP P25+ as well.  Please note, one member included in the results chart for this group is the only estimated Haplogroup R1a in our project.

Every member in our project with a Haplogroup R1b haplotype can be found by clicking on the appropriate links below. All their sequences are compared as a large group. The sequences are further divided into three separate subgroups with the modal haplotype found at the top of each subgroup's page.

The chart results comparison for the other non R1b members in the Puerto Rican DNA Geographic Project are presented elsewhere on this website.  Please look for the links. These pages are in a dynamic state of updating as we add new members and receive new results.

Many of the individuals in this group have very similar haplotypes.  Please view the MRCA table below.

ID 14851 and ID 16451 were an exact match at 12/12 markers and also matched 25/25 markers. On further upgrade, they were a 36/37 match. Their results can be seen on the yDNA25 and the yDNA37 Chart comparison pages. Both are the beforementioned unusual R1bs.  They do not share the same surname.

ID 26383, 33074 and N1972 are also exact matches at 12/12 markers. ID 26383 and 33074 upgraded to 25 markers and were still a perfect match. Only ID 33074 has upgraded to 37 markers. All three share the  surname Rivera. In fact, there are very few individuals in our project, male or female, that do not have a Rivera somewhere on either side of their family tree. The surname Rivera is one of the most common surnames in Puerto Rico and is especially so in the northcentral part of the island.  For a large percentage of the individuals from the towns of Toa Alta, Ciales, Morovis, Naranjito, Corozal, Orocovis, and Vega Baja, the Rivera surname has a common source. This specific line of the Rivera surname has been documented through multiple sources to be from four known de Rivera brothers born in Coamo, Puerto Rico c. 1710-1715.  They had a huge descendancy.

The progenitor of Diego, Lorenzo, Manuel and Tomás de Rivera was most likely born c. 1675-1685 in Coamo, Puerto Rico.

Coamo, a town rich in history, is one of the oldest on the island. The oldest towns are San Germán Auxerre (1506),
Caparra, (1508) which was later moved and renamed San Juan Bautista de Puerto Rico (1521), San Blas de Illescas de Coamo (1579). San Francisco de la Aguada (1590), San Felipe de Arecibo (1616), and Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe de Ponce (1692) . The Rivera surname is actually believed to be a compound surname since the oldest of the brothers,Tomás, appears as Don Tomás de Rivera de Mathos in several documents.

ID 26383, YS002 and the administrators of this project are all descendants of Diego de Rivera.
They are also related in several other lines.
The relationship between IDs 33074 and N1972, the individuals whose haplotype matched ID 26383, and the other de Rivera descendants has not as yet been determined.
The administrator of this project has been researching the de Rivera surname for the last 26 years.

Haplogroup Descriptions

Haplogroup R1a   The R1a lineage is believed to have originated in the Eurasian Steppes north of the Black and Caspian Seas. This lineage is believed to have originated in a population of the Kurgan culture, known for the domestication of the horse (approximately 3000 B.C.E.). These people were also believed to be the first speakers of the Indo-European language group. This lineage is currently found in central and western Asia, India, and in Slavic populations of Eastern Europe. (ref. FTDNA)

Haplogroup R1b is the most common haplogroup in European populations. It is believed to have expanded throughout Europe as humans re-colonized after the last glacial maximum 10-12 thousand years ago. This lineage is also the haplogroup containing the Atlantic modal haplotype (AMH) a series of six specific markers:

Haplogroup R1b, and its most common Haplotype, exists in high or very high frequencies in all of Western Europe from Spain in the south to the British Isles on the west and the western part of Scandinavia in the north.

Note in general: The largest influx of Spaniards to Borinquen (Puerto Rico) was from the regions of Andalucía, Galicia, Valencia, Asturia, Navarra, the Vascondados (Basque country), Aragón, Catalunya, Santander and the Balearic Islands. The history, and arrival of these individuals was faithfully researched and documented by the first lady of Puerto Rican Genealogy, Doña Estela Cifre de Loubriel (1909-1998) who made them the focus of her life's work in five detailed and highly prized sought after tomes called "La Formacción del Pueblo Puertorriqueño". Amongst these immigrants were also the Canarians. The initial arrival of the Canary Islanders, themselves the descendants of the Guanches, occurred during a first royal spanish decree in 1695 which was later followed by decrees in the years 1714, 1720, 1731, and 1797. In 1815, la Reál Cédula de Gracia, a more relatively "recent" royal decree allowed the immigration of other foreigners to Puerto Rico to settle, cultivate and own the land. This latter group included not only Canary Islanders, but Corsicans, and especially Venezuelans. Other groups who left their mark to a smaller extent are the Irish, French, Dutch, and Chinese. Not withstanding the great cultural diversity brought by all these groups, the influence of the Isleños was so great, that the spanish spoken by Puerto Ricans is rich in many Isleño words and the pronunciation of the language is so similar that it is said (and it is not surprising) that a Puerto Rican may easily be mistaken for a Canary Islander by the intonation of their syllables and their manner of speaking. It will not, therefore, be unexpected should we find theirs and all the other DNA signatures amongst our group as our project continues to expand.

Read more about the Canary Islanders by one of our members here:
Brief History of the Canarian Migration to Spanish America.

The updated 2005 Y Cromosome Phylogenetic Tree Map showing the SNPs for all the Y Haplogroups may be found here.
