Rivera DNA Project
Rivera
DNA Surname Project
(Proyecto del Apellido de Rivera)
Administrator: Edgar Rivera Ortíz
Project Background
This project is currently at an early stage. DNA testing is something
new for most of us and requires time, research, and (most important)
people.
By joining this project, you are not only fulfilling a
personal goal of knowledge. but helping a greater amount of people to
understand the provenance of this worldwide spread (WWS) surname.
All
of us RIVERA have, but not limited to, different backgrounds,
histories, origins, beliefs and cultures. We are all around the world
communicating and spreading our genes 24/7 at a remarkable pace.
In
my case, my ancestors de RIVERA spent their last 400 to 500 years on the
island of Puerto Rico. I can say with confidence that almost everyone
in Puerto Rico has at least one ancestor whose surname is RIVERA.
The
new DNA technology is now at our hands and is there to help us
understand a little bit more about WHO we are and where our direct fathers
and mothers came from. It is in ourselves, it is part of US.
"Rivera" is a well-known and
widespread surname not only in the Americas but also in Europe. It
also has many variations: Ribera, De Rivera, De Ribera, de la Rivera,
Ribeira, Rivero, Ribero, Ribeiro and others.
This project will help to understand the progresion of many of the “Rivera” descendants and their common paternal ancestors.
Due
to the current widespread geographical locations of this surname, it
will not be a surprise to have a match with a genetic distance of 4 or
more. Each individual cultural ancestry is unique, as well as how we
end up with the surname "Rivera".
Some cultures and some time in
history it was a practice to give the mother's surname to the child; to
give the grandparent's surname and/or give the surname which was more socially important.
Some of us may be Rivera because our ancestors
lived near a river, others had the surname changed to prevent religious
persecution, etc. Lets try to find out!
Thanks for participating and making this search possible.
Project Goals
Since a Surname Project in essence traces members of a family that share a
common surname, and females (a) don't carry their father's Y-DNA, and (b)
acquire a new surname by the way of marriage, in order to be relevant to the
Surname Project, the tested individual must
be a male that wants to check his paternal line (father's father's
father's...). The test to be ordered is either the Y-DNA12, Y-DNA25 or
Y-DNA37, and females should look for a brother or cousin with that
surname to be tested. Females can also order a test for themselves,
which will be the mtDNA or mtDNAPlus, but the results of this test
cannot be tied to the Surname Project. We suggest you join the Puerto
Rican Geographic Project which does have a large mitochondrial DNA
(mtDNA) substudy.
Our Main Goals are:
• To acquire a general comprehension of the “Rivera” surname geographical prominence.
• To identify Geographical and Sub-Groups within the “Rivera” Group.
• To acquire a general understanding of the “Rivera” settlements around the world

Project Surnames
Project Haplogroup Results
Overall, members belong to Haplogroup R1b which "is the most common haplogroup in European populations. It
is believed to have expanded throughout Europe as humans re-colonized
after the last glacial maximum 10-12 thousand years ago. This lineage
is also the haplogroup containing the Atlantic modal haplotype."

12 y-DNA Results
Two members had
an exact match with this test and share the same surname. It is
suggested to those two members to exchange genealogy regarding their
paternal lineage.
There is currently one exact match with
Shetland and a one-step mutation with the same haplogroup in England,
France, and Shetland.
Currently, a known exact match is located
in Shetland, in the British Islands, and one of unknown origin. One
step mutation matches are from: England, France, Ireland, Portugal,
Shetland, United Kingdom, Wales and other unknown origins.
12 Y-DNA - One Genetic Distance
There are five surnames which have a genetic distance of one: PRICE, CROWE, CLEMENTS, FEATHERSTONE and THOMAS.
What does this mean?
Our PATERNAL ancestor surnamed RIVERA most certainly has common ground
with those surnames above but not in a genealogical time frame. We are talking probably about 20 to 40
generations ago. Remember, the 12 Y-DNA cannot tell if you are
RECENTLY related to another surname. The percentage of being related
increases if you make a perfect match with someone that has your same
surname. The only way to corroborate is to upgrade your test to 25 or
37 markers.
You will find many matches under a genetic distance of two.
The
surnames that appeared more than one time are: Rice (3 times);
Smothers, Stalling, Hughes, and Stone (All four surnames 2 Times). As
the genetic distance increase the less probable is that you are related
to that Surname. The repetition of surnames cannot be though to be a
significant genetic trail. An explanation could be that a higher number
of people with such surnames took the test; however, further testing
will be need it.
25 & 37 Y-DNA Results
Results of one set of 25 markers has been received and another is
in progress. We need additional members to test for those markers.
